Ambassador Ramalho Ortigão was born in Lisbon.
After graduating in Social and Political Sciences at Lisbon’s Universidade Técnica, he joined the Diplomatic Service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1972.
Apart from the occupying various posts within the Portuguese Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Ramalho Ortigão served at the Embassy of Portugal in Dublin (1976-1979), Dakar (1980-1985), Brasilia (1985-1990) and Brussels (1991-1993). He also formed part of Portugal’s delegation to NATO (DELNATO), and served as auditor at NATO’s Defence College in Rome. Between 1999 and 2005 he was resident Ambassador of Portugal to Lagos, and mostly recently Ambassador in Islamabad (2005- October 2008). During the latter period he was also accredited as non-resident Ambassador to Kabul.
Ambassador Ramalho Ortigão is married to Marta Vaz Pinto Ramalho Ortigão and has four children.
He presented his credentials as Ambassador of Portugal to Malta on the 27th November, 2008.
